Wimborne residents joined the national campaign to Stop Rosebank, holding a placard alongside a Wimborne town sign on Friday 4 September 2026, to send a clear local message: the UK Government must not allow new fossil fuel extraction in the North Sea, and it must accelerate the transition to clean, homegrown energy.
The action comes in the wake of communities across the UK experiencing increasingly extreme heat. Campaigners argue that approving new oil and gas extraction is completely at odds with the Government’s plan for energy independence.
Rosebank’s oil will be sold on the international market to the highest bidder, so it will not improve UK energy security or protect households from volatile global fossil fuel prices.
“Families are struggling with energy bills,” said local resident Joanna Bury.
“If we want genuine energy security we need to move away from volatile global fossil fuel markets and invest in cheap, homegrown renewables. At the same time, the record-breaking heat we have experienced is a stark reminder that we cannot keep fuelling the climate crisis.”
Campaigners are calling on the Government to:
- Stop Rosebank and all new oil and gas extraction.
- Honour and legislate its manifesto commitment to end new oil and gas licences.
- Accelerate the transition to renewable energy with the urgency demanded by the climate and cost of living crises.
The choice is stark. We can lock ourselves into more fossil fuel dependence or we can build a cleaner, cheaper and energy secure future with renewables.
Stop Rosebank. Invest in renewables.
