How the Leave campaign flipped the referendum: a compendium of the propaganda and a reminder of the lies

Editor’s preface:
On 23 June 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union by 51.89 per cent for Leave to 48.11 per cent for Remain, a small margin of 3.78 per cent. This equated to 17,410,742 votes to leave and 16,141,241 to remain, a margin of 1,269,501 votes.

Right up to the last few weeks, a win for Remain seemed assured. But then something happened to manipulate voters into support for, perhaps, the most monumental act of self-harm in the UK’s modern political history.

This is an important record of the material used to con the public and a reminder that such tactics were not, and are not, a one-off. The techniques will be used again to undermine our democracy and our human rights; they are already in play to convince people that ‘boat people’ are the cause of all our woes, that the ‘woke’ are on the side of criminals and against democracy, that leaving the ECHR is essential, that climate change activists are enemies of the people and that the NHS can only be ‘saved’ by privatisation.

For that reason, we wanted to preserve this sobering compilation, both as a record and a warning. Our thanks to Laura for putting it together and allowing us to reproduce it and to all those who contributed further evidence.

How did the Leave campaign manage to get that timely blip and win the Brexit referendum?

These were ads on social media – very precisely targeted.

Plus the widely known ones, the NHS red bus and Farage's poster.

All that on top of the ground work previously done by the tabloids, for… decades!
